If you have asthma, you’re not alone. The Mayo Clinic estimates that around 10% of children and 5% of adults in the United States have asthma. Approximately half of the children who develop childhood asthma have their first asthma attack before age 10. Childhood asthma can be frustrating to live with and can be dangerous to your health. Dr. Livas is a board-certified asthma doctor who can properly diagnose and treat asthma. He can help you control an asthma attack so you can live your everyday life, regardless of age. Call us at 859-277-3114 to schedule a consultation.
The cause of asthma can be unknown, but it is often an inherited condition. Many triggers can bring on an asthma attack. These include exercise, respiratory infections, cold air, and stress. In addition, an asthma attack can be activated by factors including mold spores, odors, pollen, smoke, animal dander, and dust mites.
During an asthma attack, your bronchial tubes and lungs become inflamed and restrict airflow, which makes breathing difficult. Common asthma symptoms include difficulty breathing, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing. An asthma attack can last minutes to hours or even days. While some mild attacks can occur, others can be life-threatening if the airflow is severely blocked.
Dr. Livas begins your care with a comprehensive exam, health history, and in-office allergy testing, including a lung function test called spirometry, used for childhood asthma patients ages four and older. As a professional asthma doctor, Dr. Livas takes the time to educate you about your condition. You’ll discover how to avoid asthma triggers and recognize and respond early to asthma attacks. T
Dr. Livas offers oral asthma medications, inhalers, and XOLAIR® steroid-free medication given by injection and will also suggest allergy shots (immunotherapy), which can help prevent asthma attacks by making you less sensitive to allergens that trigger them.
