Skin Testing for Allergies

Office Skin Testing

Dr. Livas offers convenient in-office skin tests that accurately diagnose allergic asthma, insect sting allergies, airborne allergies (pollen, mold allergy, dust mites, animal dander), latex allergy, dermatitis (eczema), and food allergies. Skin testing involves exposing your skin to allergens and monitoring for signs of an allergic reaction. If the skin at the test site becomes red, itchy, or swollen, we view the test as positive for that particular allergen. Dr. Livas can test for several allergens simultaneously to identify which ones are causing symptoms.

Same-Day Test Results

Dr. Livas provides scratch and intradermal tests during the same office visit, and the results of patch tests are available within 48 hours. Your test results are crucial in developing your treatment plan, which may involve allergy medication or immunotherapy.

Woman With Skin Allergy — Lexington, KY — Allergy Asthma & Immunology: Dr. Iraklis Livas

Skin Allergy Treatment

Hives, rashes, and itchy skin are common symptoms associated with skin allergies. Skin allergies may be caused by allergens in the air you’ve breathed, substances that have come into contact with your skin, and food you eat. These skin issues are often caused by an immune system reaction, indicating an allergy. If you have skin allergy symptoms, look to Dr. Iraklis C. Livas. As a board-certified and fellowship-trained allergist and immunologist, Dr. Livas is an expert in solving skin allergy problems.

Allergy-Related Skin Condition Types

Dr. Livas can accurately diagnose and effectively treat the whole spectrum of allergy-related skin conditions, including:

  • Atopic dermatitis (severe, chronic eczema)
  • Contact dermatitis (poison ivy, nickel allergy, cosmetic reactions)
  • Hives
  • Summer skin rashes
  • Reactions from the sun
  • Latex allergy
  • Insect bite rashes

Your face, neck, hands, and arms encounter so many substances daily that they are the most common sites for an allergic skin reaction, but no part of your anatomy is immune. The allergen can be a substance in a product you’ve used for months or even years – it doesn’t have to be from a new product.

Hay Fever Solutions

About 15% to 20% of the US population has some degree of allergic rhinitis or hay fever. It is found equally in both men and women. Usually, hay fever is seasonal, but it can last an entire year or more if the allergen stays present throughout the year. Spring and fall are the primary hay fever seasons. This part of Kentucky delivers a whole host of things that can cause hay fever, including grasses, oak, ragweed, and birch pollen. As a board-certified, fellowship-trained allergy specialist and immunologist, Dr. Livas is an expert in treating hay fever.

Hay Fever Symptoms

Despite its name, hay fever is not caused by hay, and there is no fever. Symptoms such as eye irritation, sneezing, and nasal congestion are expected. Like all allergic reactions, hay fever is caused by allergens, foreign “invaders” such as pollens and molds that enter the body equally by inhalation or through the skin. You may, for instance, have a mold allergy and not know it. The most common hay fever symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, watery, itchy eyes, postnasal drip, and a plugged ear(s).

Hay Fever Treatment

After discovering the catalyst for your hay fever, Dr. Livas will develop a personalized treatment plan for symptom relief. This treatment may include allergy medication, allergy shots, antihistamines, topical nasal steroids, and oral decongestants. Of course, one of the best remedies is simply avoiding the allergen causing your hay fever. Finally, some air conditioner filters can extract a significant number of irritants.
